NHS Health Scotland has developed a package to help you build upon existing good practice and support work towards a whole system approach to health improvement within your health service.

• The HPHS Framework, along with the project planning tool, supports the successful planning and implementation of a coordinated approach to health improvement. It provides flexible guidance on the 'how' of health promotion activities. The emphasis throughout is on inequalities in health, participation, empowerment and sustainability.

The HPHS Framework focuses health improvement activity by ensuring that key elements are considered and systems are in place to support positive change.

• The booklet HPHS: An Introduction provides some context to the framework and how to approach planning for health improvement activities.

Resources

There is a range of factors which need to be in place for effective and sustainable health improvement to become integrated into health care services. These are:
• management commitment
• competence in public health and health promotion
• specialist support
• co-ordination
• use of tools such as the HPHS Guidance and WHO HPH Standards from our HPHS Support and Advice page

The investment required for each factor is small, but putting them all together has proven to be effective (see case studies).
