Health Promoting Health Service Hub and Implementation Sites
In many of the national networks that form part of the wider World Health Organisation Health Promoting Hospitals Network (WHO HPH), one hospital acts as a national coordinating site. NHS Health Scotland is the coordinating site for Scotland.
HUB HOSPITALS
NHS Health Scotland provides funding to hub hospitals to develop national networks within particular specialisms, to benchmark against all WHO HPH standards and to develop areas of good practice.
Royal Hospital for Sick Children
Paediatrics Hub
Working on a number of initiatives to embed a health improvement ethos within healthcare services for children and adolescents, Royal Hospital for Sick Children aims to:
- promote the rights of children in hospital
- improve the effectiveness of child and family feedback processes
- develop computer-assisted communication for patients with limited English language proficiency
- promote staff health and wellbeing
- participate as a member of the Task Force on Health Promotion for Children and Adolescents in and by Hospitals (external link)
- participate as a member of the Task Force on Migrant Friendly Hospitals (external link)

NHS Tayside – Maternity Division
Maternity Hub
Utilizing evaluations of parent education and patient information in maternity services to influence learning and programme development, NHS Tayside – Maternity Division aims to:
- develop a network of Scottish maternity units
- review the effectiveness of parent education and patient information
- develop an audit tool to collect information on health improvement activities

Leverndale Hospital - Glasgow
Mental Health Hub
Leverndale Hospital aims to adapt and embed the HPHS ethos in psychiatric services. Leverndale Hospital’s range of health improvement initiatives will include:
- benchmark against the ENSH standards (Leverndale Hospital has been smoke free since 1 July 2007)
- apply the HPH Benchmarking Tool across all in-patient areas
- increase physical activity for patients and staff (Hospital Gym, Paths to Health, Jog Scotland)
- deliver Get Active and Branching Out
- participate as a member of the Task Force on Health Promoting Psychiatric Services
- provide introductory training in HPHS

NHS Ayrshire & Arran - Ayr Hospital
Areas for action identified
- Addictions (including tobacco)
- Educate staff on managing stress effectively in the workplace
- Reduce overall sickness absence rates in the hospital
Additionally Ayrshire Maternity Unit intends to implement approaches to improve breastfeeding rates and reduction in tobacco use, targeting where possible, those living in areas of deprivation. For further information please contact Grace Moore
IMPLEMENTATION SITES
NHS Borders, NHS Lanarkshire, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Glasgow Learning Disabilities Partnership and NHS Grampian are also participating as HPHS implementation sites. These sites aim to develop examples of good practice using the HPHS Framework and to embed a health improvement ethos within these organisations.
