WISH award winners 2010


Health Consultancy Project
This innovative project has helped to improve the health lifestyles of looked after young people (LAYP) through building motivation and skills of the young people through 1-to-1 intensive and confidential support. Consultancy is also offered to workers and carers to support them in working with LAYP. Young people were involved in the development of the service through the needs assessment and informing the development of resources.

Make Your Position Clear
This is an example of excellent partnership working between three health boards (NHS Ayrshire and Arran, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and NHS Lanarkshire) who worked together to develop a media awareness campaign to promote condom and lubricant use and regular sexual health check ups for men who have sex with men in the West of Scotland.

Psychosexual Therapy Drop in clinic
Unique joint project between Relationships Scotland Central and NHS Forth Valley Central Sexual Health Department to support patients who are experiencing sexual dysfunction due to a health condition, psychological impact of illness, medication or overwhelming anxiety. Sexual and relationship therapy is delivered by an accredited therapist and is free to patients referred to the clinic. Patients are supported through the therapeutic process to improve their quality of life.

Steve Retson Project (SRP) Pipeworks Sauna Outreach sexual health clinic for men who have sex with men (MSM)
This innovative project has been successful in increasing MSM access to sexual health assessment and testing by the provision of an outreach sexual health service within a commercial gay venue setting.

Health improvement setting


Sandyford Sexual Health Advising Competency Framework for Specialist Sexual Health Nurses undertaking training in sexual health advising
This is training offered to first level Registered Nurses with a minimum of 2 years experience in Reproductive and Sexual Health to be competent in carrying out Sexual Health Advising duties within their role. The nurse works with a Sexual Health Adviser mentor and completes a competency book over a period of 3 – 6 months in order to develop knowledge, skills and training in the role of Sexual Health Advising to allow them to practice this and deliver in their care of patients they may see in sexual and reproductive health.

SSW@MBU: An innovative partnership between Sandyford South West (SSW) and the Mother and Baby Mental Health Unit (MBU)
The MBU caters for women, with their baby, who have puerperal psychosis. The MBU also accommodates women with diagnosed mental health illness who require treatment regimes to be re-established following pregnancy. This sexual and reproductive health service provided by Sandyford within the MBU helps vulnerable women to make informed choices about their sexual health.

Sandyford East
Sandyford East delivers a socio-medical model of integrated sexual and reproductive health care within an area of high social and economic deprivation. The service provides specialist sexual and reproductive services to residents of Glasgow’s most deprived inner city area in an accessible way, addressing issues of inequality.

Caring for the sexual and reproductive health needs of clients who are HIV positive
A Specialist Sexual Health Nurse Adviser (SSHNA) was placed at the Brownlee Centre Glasgow to promote sexual and reproductive health and partner notification. This has helped to ensure all clients who are HIV positive and attending the Brownlee centre have access and are seen by a SSHNA in order to have their sexual and reproductive health needs met.

NHS Forth Valley, Central Sexual Health, Short Film – young person’s visit to a clinic
The film was developed to promote newly branded Sexual Health Services for young people. The DVD gives young people an idea of what to expect when they attend a sexual health clinic for the first time. The film is available via the Central Sexual Health website and hard copies will be distributed to secondary schools across the Central Scotland area.

Health improvement in a community setting


Specialist Sexual and Reproductive Health provision from Sandyford as outreach for one session per week for clients undergoing a Drug Treatment and Testing Order
A partnership between sexual health and addiction social care staff to promote sexual health in a community based setting as an integral component of the package of care available for clients with addiction issues and who are currently undergoing a drug treatment and testing order.

Sandyford Renfrewshire Kibble Partnership
This partnership between Sandyford Renfrewshire and the Kibble Education and Care Centre has helped to increase the uptake of sexual health screening by offering on site testing, condom demonstration and the provision of up-to-date information on sexually transmitted infections, as well as promoting regular sexual health check ups and exploring attitudes and values to sexual health.

Waverley Care African Health Project: Drama outreach
This innovative project uses drama as a way of raising awareness of HIV and encouraging HIV testing in African communities.

Toonspeak Young People’s Theatre
Teenage Sexual Health: The Musical was a unique musical theatre performance project created entirely by young people aged 13 – 17 from North Glasgow to combat the growing problem of poor sexual health amongst young people from deprived communities.

North Glasgow Youth Health Service
This is a one-stop holistic, confidential, youth friendly drop-in service which is accessible to young people aged 12 – 19 years and offers access to health and sexual wellbeing consultations, physical activities/gym, workshops and diversionary activities, access to a counsellor, an addiction worker and youth worker as well as smoking cessation.

Girl Power
The ‘Girl Power’ programme aims to work with local vulnerable teenage girls to improve their self esteem and increase their skills and confidence so that they can negotiate healthy, respectful relationships. The programme covers issues such as self-esteem, body image, healthy relationships and teenage pregnancy and parenthood. The programme is designed and delivered in partnership between Inverclyde CHP and Inverclyde Council.

Joining the Links
This is a multi-agency collaboration between Sexual Health Dumfries and Galloway, Alcohol and Drugs Partnership and the Domestic Abuse and Violence Against Women Partnership to address harm reduction for alcohol and drug misuse, risky sexual health behaviours and increase awareness of the interlinking issues of gender based violence and relationships.

Community and education setting


Health Opportunities Team (HOT)
There is existing growing evidence of the benefits of addressing the holistic needs of young people and HOT is an innovative project located in an area of multiple deprivation which uses a multifaceted approach in and outside of school in order to engage with young people, empowering them to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.

FPA Speakeasy Project Scotland
Speakeasy is a community education programme that develops the skills and confidence of parents and carers in Scotland to address the challenges of sex and relationships education. The project supports families facing social and economic disadvantage, enabling parents to take on the role of sex educators in their homes and communities.

Sun, Sea, Sangria and (Safer) Sex
This is an interactive workshop and DVD resource aimed at young people aged 16+ to raise awareness of key health issues when on holiday, in particular with regards to sexual health and Blood Borne Viruses (BBV). It was developed by young people and can be delivered as a peer education resource.

LANDED Peer Education Service
Through engaging with young people in awareness raising workshops and by researching current statistics in relation to Lanarkshire, LANDED identified the need for an educational resource to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS.

Holistic health drop-ins within secondary schools in NHS Ayrshire and Arran
This service which has been implemented within the school setting has ensured easier access for young people to sexual health services. Offering Chlamydia screening, pregnancy testing and C-Card sign up in schools has improved access to young people living in rural localities and those who struggle to access other sexual health services.

The Sex Factor
This film is an educational toolkit aimed at professionals who work with young people. In September 2009, the NHS Education for Scotland Young Person’s Public Partnership Forum (PPF), in partnership with NHS Health Scotland, hosted a sexual health education awareness event in Glasgow. This event was hosted for young people from a variety of socioeconomic and geographical backgrounds, in order to raise awareness of services for young people in relation to sexual health and relationships, collect young people’s views and experiences of health services and influence ways in which children and young people have their voices heard.

Health Buddies in Schools
Health Buddies is a peer-led sexual health and relationships (SHRE) programme in two Dundee secondary schools. Twenty-five third year pupils were trained, then developed materials and delivered SHRE classes to first year pupils within their school during Social Education classes as an alternative to teacher led SHRE.
