Giving You More Choice campaign
Launched on 14 July 2009, Giving You More Choice is an 18-month campaign that aims to:
- promote the three most effective methods of longer-lasting contraception (the intrauterine methods and the implant)
- improve the overall knowledge and awareness of longer-lasting methods
- encourage women aged 18 to 44 years to explore their contraceptive options when next visiting their GP or family planning services
- ultimately reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and repeat terminations.
The campaign has been developed following research with women and professionals. These findings highlighted that women wanted accurate information that challenged some of the myths about longer-lasting contraception.
Many women reported that they ‘asked for the pill’ and that’s all they got whether it was suitable or not. Many health professionals admitted that they did not know enough about longer lasting contraceptives to offer women real support in deciding what contraceptives was best for them.
Campaign products:
- an information leaflet for women available from GPs and sexual health services (translations in core languages are now available)
- posters and other publicity materials in the changing rooms of women's retail outlets, leisure centres and gyms
- mirror stickers in cinema toilets (shown at the same time as female-oriented movies)
- convenience posters in pubs and clubs.
To help health professionals respond to the conversations women might have with them on longer-lasting contraception, we’ve provided longer-lasting contraception briefing guidelines that can be used within the confines of a limited 10-minute patient consultation.
