Alcohol Brief Interventions: developing and embedding delivery

This section contains information on local delivery and practice to support Alcohol Brief Intervention (ABI) activity, in a variety of settings.

Alcohol Brief Interventions

NHS Health Scotland’s Alcohol programme supports Alcohol Brief Intervention (ABI) delivery and the long term embedding of ABIs.

These pages provide NHS Boards and Alcohol and Drug Partnerships with an opportunity to build on their current delivery programmes and inform emerging delivery by:

  • sharing a summary of their ABI delivery activity
  • providing an opportunity for the wider ABI workforce to share learning and networking.

Alcohol brief interventions should be targeted at anyone who is drinking at levels above the sensible drinking guidelines, but not at a dependent level, as ABIs have been shown to be effective in reducing alcohol consumption among hazardous and harmful drinkers.

The priority settings for ABI delivery remain the same for 2012-13: primary care, accident and emergency and antenatal care, with ongoing development of ABI delivery in wider settings. The priority settings are included in these web pages to highlight new developments in practice.

Summaries of ABI delivery in each of the settings, listed in the right-hand column of this page, give brief information and contact details to allow contact for further information and discussion.

This information will enable a sharing of knowledge and experience of different approaches.
