“Old Enough to Ask, Old Enough to Know”: Parental involvement in Youth Health Services, A Castlemilk Perspective
Through its day-to-day work, Health Spot (external link) identified a gap in the current understanding of parents’ knowledge of, and views concerning, health services designed for young people. Funding was secured in order to carry out some exploratory research to discover directly from parents what they felt about the subject. This information could then inform the direction of future service development and highlight further research needs.
The research and report writing is now complete and copies of the report are available from Health Spot by telephoning 0141 560 3035 or emailing enquiries@healthspot.org.uk.

Home School Partnership, South Lanarkshire – Parenting Programmes
The Home School Partnership in South Lanarkshire has produced two new resources which aim to get young people to think about parenting and the consequences of their decisions. These are:
Twelve-session Parenting Programme
The programme is divided in four sections looking at Relationships, Sex and Contraception, Pregnancy and Planning and What makes a 'Good' Parent. It is designed to be as flexible as possibile with sessions that stand alone or can be built into mini programmes.
Caroline's Story video pack
A video pack named 'Caroline's Story' tells of the experience of Caroline, who gives birth to a baby girl six weeks after her 16th birthday. The video is backed up by a resource pack aimed at getting young people thinking about the reality of becoming a parent at such a young age.
Caroline's story is quite positive in that she receives a tremendous amount of support from her parents. This was something teaching staff in schools were initially quite wary of as they felt that it may send out the wrong message. However, following a pilot programme in one of the schools, staff credited the young people in their classes saying that they realised this was not the case for everyone. They also said it allowed staff to enter into discussions with young people that had been previously been difficult.
Both packs are priced at £25 with photocopiable worksheets for young people and are available from Fiona Robertson – fiona.robertson@hspo.s-lanark.org.uk or Home School Partnership, Station Road, Blantyre G73 9AA, telephone 01698 823076.
