NHS Health Scotland's Evaluation Summer School is a world-class learning opportunity.

NHS Health Scotland has been involved in funding it from its early days, and since 2008 it has been involved in its organisation.

2012 CPD opportunities

EVALUATION SUMMER SCHOOL 2012
Gill Westhorpe Visit, 16-20 April 2012

Due to the financial climate, there will be no three day Summer School this year, but we do still want to offer opportunities for CPD. We are aiming to bring good international brains, such as Gill, to Scotland to stimulate and challenge our practice, and trying to make the most of their visit via a more dispersed model. Gill will be giving seminars on the 16th April at the University of Stirling, and on the 19th at the MRC in Glasgow.

Aims

The Evaluation Summer School aims to:

  • build understanding of recent developments in evaluation
  • use expert opinion from here and abroad
  • provide opportunities to debate innovation in evaluation
  • encourage learning from across sectors

Audience

The Summer School brings together not just international and local experts, academics, and policy makers, but practitioners and evaluation users from across a wide variety of sectors including:

  • local government
  • the voluntary sector
  • central government
  • independent consultants
  • the NHS

What's next?

In November 2012 we asked our networks and previous Evaluation Summer School (ESS) participants for their insights and experience in order to shape future Summer Schools.

Whilst only 22 responses were received, the insights provided were still useful.

Key themes were:

  • The ESS serves a valued role in providing unique evaluation professional development.
  • It can strengthen the connections between evaluators, academics, policy makers and commissioners.
  • Participants prefer a 2- day, blended learning approach, but the current financial situation means other evaluation learning opportunities need to be found.
  • In a time of austerity, an ESS, in whatever form, can play an important role in promoting the value of evaluative learning.
  • Practical, shared or peer-learning opportunities are highly regarded and this must be to the fore whatever form the ESS takes.
  • We need to explore integrating web-based learning approaches in evaluation.
