How responses are made

Responses to formal consultations are drafted by Network subgroups as appropriate to topic under consideration and circulated by e-mail to all Network members for comment and suggested revision before being submitted to the appropriate agency. Member organisations and individuals also respond directly to such consultations.

Consultation responses:

Climate Change Bill consultation (April 2008)

The network response to this Bill recognised the importance of synergies between actions on climate change and health and called for increased recognition of these links within the draft Bill.

SNH draft corporate strategy (March 2008)

The Network response to this strategy underlined the associations between the natural environment, green spaces and health and well being, and the importance of these to health improvement and health protection.

SEPA draft climate change plan (March 2008)

The network response to this plan recognised the synergies between actions on climate change and health, and suggested a higher recognition of the links within the document.

Transport Strategy (July 2006)

The Network response to the Scottish Transport Strategy (July 2006) underlined the links between transport strategy and sustainable development and health.

Forestry Strategy (September 2005)

The Network response to the Forestry Strategy Consultation (September 2005) discussed the importance of forestry for climate change and contact with the natural environment for health and in particular wellbeing.

Sustainable Development Strategy (August 2005)

The Network response to the Scottish Sustainable Development Strategy (August 2005) underlined the importance of climate change for health locally and globally, and drew parallels between the concerns of sustainable development and public health.

In addition it called for consideration of the impacts on health and wellbeing on proposed developments (including consideration of the total burden to local communities of the proposal with in situ environmental burdens.

Environmental Pollution – Urban Environment (July 2005)

The Network response to the UK Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution call for evidence on the urban environment (July 2005) underlined the Network’s broad interpretation of the way in which the environment influences health (including psycho-social influences) and made clear links with the environmental justice agenda.

Noise (May 2005)

The Network response to the Scottish Executive consultation on noise (May 2005) underlined the need for assessing cumulative noise exposure to communities (rather than separating sources of noise).

Climate Change (February 2005)

The Network response to the UK consultation on "Taking it on" (the UK sustainable development framework) (July 2004) took the view that there should be overt links made between sustainable development and health and wellbeing, and emphasised links with environmental justice.

The Network response to the Scottish Executive consultation on Climate Change (February 2005) welcomed the strategy and the health dividends which would accrue, and underlined synergies with public health campaigns.

Smoke Free Public Places (September 2004)

The Network response to the Scottish Executive consultation on smoke free public places (September 2004) welcomed the proposal and provided an evidence based response on the links between exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and health.

Strategic Environmental Assessment (March 2004)

The Network response to the Scottish Executive consultation on strategic environmental assessment (March 2004) called for a holistic view of environmental effects on health including consideration of wellbeing, and pointed to the use of methods associated with Health Impact Assessment.
