Breastfeeding Expert Group (BEG)

In October 2003, the Early Years Learning Network convened a Breastfeeding Expert Group (BEG). This group's remit was to assemble best available evidence to support efforts to increase rates in breastfeeding initiation and duration.

The membership of the BEG was deliberately multi-agency and multidisciplinary, comprising policy-makers, practitioners and academics, all with interest and expertise in breastfeeding issues.

This broad spectrum of members' interests was fundamental to ensuring that the BEG focused on evidence that would be useful to those working in the field, whether in policy, planning, or in practice.

At the same time, the BEG's membership provided an opportunity to capitalise on the respective strengths of a wide range of professional roles, including those with expertise in critically appraising, and synthesising evidence.

As the Early Years National Learning Network has a specific remit to disseminate lessons learned from Starting Well, two of the project's health visitors are members of this group.

The reports from this group were published during autumn 2006.
