A selection of links to free databases of health information available online.
BioMed Central (external link)
Provides access to original bio-medical research articles. Subject areas covered include public health, cancer, nutrition and infectious diseases. Content can be browsed and downloaded without registration but (free) registration is required to use the search facility.
PubMed (external link)
Provided by the US National Library of Medicine, PubMed offers access to citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals. Includes links to full-text articles and other related resources.
National Research Register (external link)
Database of ongoing and recently completed research projects funded by, or of interest to, the UK's National Health Service (NHS). Provides a record of projects from early 2000 onwards.
ReFeR (Research Findings Electronic Register) (external link)
Research Findings Register is a database of the findings of research studies funded by the Department of Health. Search options include by research question, by methodology and by sample groups.
ERIC – Education Resources Information Center (external link)
Digital library of education-related resources, sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences of the US Department of Education. Opened to the public on September 1, 2004, the collection consisted primarily of electronic bibliographic records describing journal and non-journal literature selected by ERIC from 1966-2003. The collection has now expanded to include full-text articles.
EducatiOn-Line (external link)
Provides access to the full text of conference papers, working papers and electronic literature covering topical issues in educational research, policy and practice. Browse options are available for both the index and the thesaurus. Advanced search options include by title, author, subject or free text.
AgeLine (external link)
Provides access to abstracts from the social gerontology and ageing-related literature. US-based service that provides ready-made searches for popular topics such as health behaviour and obesity. Full searching of the database can be done by subject, title and author.
POPLINE (external link)
Reproductive health database containing citations and abstracts for scientific articles, reports, books and unpublished reports in the field of population, family planning and related issues. Instant searches available on a range of topics including adolescent pregnancy, breastfeeding and HIV/AIDS prevention. Manual searching can be done by subject, author, title, keywords and source.
DIPEx – the Database of Individual Patient Experiences (external link)
DIPEx features a wide variety of personal experiences of health and illness. Provides access to audio and video interviews of people who have experienced illness as well as giving information on treatment and support. Illnesses covered include cancers, immunisation and mental health.
