Accessibility at the Library

The library aims to offer equal access to all users.

Access and facilities

The library is located on the lower level of the Priory building, where there is:

  • A level entry.
  • A level interior.
  • An induction loop system.
  • An adapted toilet.
  • Disabled parking.

Guide dogs are always welcome at the library.

Accessibility services for computers

The library offers a variety of accessibility tools:

TextHELP! 'Read and Write' software
This software aids sensory and cognitive access by offering the following features: screen magnification for bigger characters on the screen; audio speech text reader; spell checking; colour highlighting of words and sentences for visual reinforcement; homonym checking; word prediction; auto-correction; abbreviation expansion and thesaurus.
Available on computers 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Compact keyboard
This smaller than usual keyboard is intended for users with limited movement or reach, or for younger children. Because of its size it is more easily positioned, and can fit between the arms of a standard wheelchair. It is also often suited to single-handed users. The actual key sizes are similar to those of a standard keyboard, space is saved by removing the numeric keys and reducing the gaps between the editing and function keys.
Available on computer 4.

Keyguard
This is a rigid plate with holes, which is positioned over the compact keyboard. This makes it impossible to press two keys at once, and allows the users to rest their hands and arms on the guard without depressing the keys. The keyguard can be easily lifted off if required.
Available on computer 4.

Trackballs
Trackballs offer an alternative to the standard mouse design. They are static, operated by moving a ball on top with fingers, thumbs and palms, rather than by rolling the whole device around the tabletop. The larger ball is intended to make it easier to control and move the cursor, and the size also makes it suitable for foot use.
Available on computer 3.

Dual keyboard and mouse connectors
These allow more than one device to be connected to the computer simultaneously, so that users can change between mouse and trackball or keyboards without restarting the computer.
Available on computers 2, 3 and 4.

Ergo Gel mouse mat
Ergonomically designed mouse mat, with gel wrist support.
Available on all computers.

Staff assistance
The library staff can also help to adjust the appearance of the computer screens to make them easier to read – please ask for help.
