Outcome Framework for Pregnancy and Parenthood in Young People

 

Glossary and Acronyms

The following are some of the key terms used in the models and accompanying evidence:

Attachment

an emotional bond between an infant or toddler and primary caregiver, a strong bond being vital for the child's normal behavioural and social development.

Contraception

Contraception tries to stop conception happening by keeping the egg and sperm apart or by stopping egg production.

Health Inequalities

the unfair and avoidable differences in people’s health across social groups and between different population groups.

Health outcomes

a change in the health status of an individual, group or population which is attributable to a planned intervention or series of interventions, regardless of whether such an intervention was intended to change health status.

Integrated joint working

working jointly through the integrated health and social care services in Scotland

Life chances

opportunities each individual has to improve his or her quality of life.

Parenthood

the state of being a parent and the responsibilities involved.

Primary prevention

aims to prevent disease or injury before it ever occurs.

Preconception health

a woman's health before she becomes pregnant.

Conception

the action of conceiving a child or of one being conceived.

Proportionate universalism

the resourcing and delivering of universal services at a scale and intensity proportionate to the degree of need.

Sexually Active

Sexually active is if you have ever had penetrative, non-penetrative or oral sex contact with a man or a woman, then you are sexually active.

Sexual Health Wellbeing

Sexual health is a state of physical, mental and social wellbeing in relation to sexuality. It requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence.

Sexually Transmitted Infections

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections passed on from one person to another through unprotected [vaginal/anal sex) or sometimes through genital or oral contact.

Safer sex

Using protection [condoms] in order to reduce the risk of a sexually transmitted infection or unintended pregnancy.

Unprotected sex

Having sexual intercourse without protection (a condom and other contraception) from sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy

Unintended Pregnancy

Unintended pregnancies are pregnancies that were not the planned outcome of sexual intercourse.
