The National Programme for Improving Mental Health and Wellbeing
Launched in October 2001 as part of the Scottish Executive's Health Department, the National Programme takes the lead on positive mental health and wellbeing improvement. It helps shape, fund and support a series of key initiatives and support partnerships that are focused on different aspects of improving Scotland's Mental Health.
The National Programme has funded and, in collaboration with NHS Health Scotland and major mental health charities and public health bodies, helped to create and support a range of campaign organisations. Each of them advances its key aims in different ways.
Breathing Space – a free, confidential phone-line and website for people experiencing low mood and depression. 0800 83 85 87
Choose Life – Scotland’s national strategy and action plan to prevent suicide.
Scotland’s Mental Health First Aid – a training course that helps people to recognise the signs and symptoms of someone with mental health problems.
Scottish Recovery Network – promoting and supporting recovery from mental illness.
‘see me..’ – the national anti-stigma campaign.
The National Programme also works in partnership with and provides funding to a range of organisations that are engaged in work around our key aims, including:
HeadsUpScotland, the Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives, National Resource Centre for Ethnic Minority Health.
