Towards a Mentally Flourishing Scotland: Policy and Action Plan 2009-2011
Towards a Mentally Flourishing Scotland (TAMFS) was launched by the Scottish Government in May 2009.
This policy and action plan demonstrates the Government’s continuing commitment to supporting: the promotion of good mental wellbeing; reducing the prevalence of common mental health problems, suicide and self harm; and improving the quality of life of those experiencing mental health problems or mental illness.
TAMFS seeks to build on action of the last seven years, linked to the former National Programme for Improving Mental Health and Wellbeing, in particular aiming to secure commitment from more partners, and encouraging and supporting more locally driven action.
The National Programme for Improving Mental Health and Wellbeing
Launched in October 2001 as part of the Scottish Executive's Health Department, the National Programme took the lead on positive mental health and wellbeing improvement. It helped to shape, fund and support a series of key initiatives and support partnerships that focused on different aspects of improving Scotland's mental health.
The National Programme funded and, in collaboration with NHS Health Scotland and major mental health charities and public health bodies, helped to create and support a range of campaign organisations.
- Breathing Space: a free, confidential phone-line and website for people experiencing low mood and depression. [Phone: 0800 83 85 87]
- Choose Life: Scotland’s national strategy and action plan to prevent suicide.
- Scotland's Mental Health First Aid: a training course that helps people to recognise the signs and symptons of someone with mental health problems.
- Scottish Recovery Network: a network that promotes and supports recovery from mental illness.
- see me....: the national anti-stigma campaign.
