Translation, Interpreting and Communications Support (TICS)

Programme of work for improvement of translation, interpreting and communications support (TICS) in NHS Scotland

Many of the patients of NHS Scotland face difficulties in communicating with healthcare staff as a consequence of language and other communication barriers.

A national TICS Strategy has been developed (within the scope of the Equally Well programme of work on health inequalities and under the auspices of the Mutuality, Equality and Human Rights Board of the Scottish Government) to improve current arrangements and thereby reduce inequities in accessing health care and health information for such people.

NHS Health Scotland is working with all NHS Boards and many other partners to deliver improvements in the quality and delivery of TICS services through implementation of this Strategy.

The programme of work is currently funded for three years (2010-2013) by the Scottish Government Health Department.

We welcome the opportunity to work with many partners in the NHS and other organisations in the public, private and third sectors. Please contact us at Christopher Homfray or Catriona Bowie or call 0141 354 2900.
