Promoting equality and tackling health inequalities

The Equality, People and Performance Directorate works with health boards in NHS Scotland to tackle discrimination and promote the equalities agenda. The Directorate also leads the corporate business planning, performance management and HR functions of NHS Health Scotland.

NHS Health Scotland’s Equality, People and Performance Directorate (EPP) was established in 2008 to continue the "Fair for All" policy in the NHS in Scotland, tackling discrimination and inequality in the NHS.

Two years on, we have taken stock of how we support both Health Scotland and other NHS Boards and have launched a revised structure and programmes of work from 1 October 2010. You can view the revised team in the Our Structure section

Find out what NHS Health Scotland is doing to promote equality in its work.

We have also completed a report on how equality impact assessment is informing our health improvement work at NHS Health Scotland. The report takes account of the equality impact assessments that we have carried out since 2006 until 2009.

EQIA Guidance

Equitable healthcare in NHS Scotland: How to improve services using Equality Impact Assessment

Doing EQIA well is not only about following processes, but about achieving outcomes and changes that benefit patients, service users and staff.

This guidance is for NHS Scotland staff to help improve the quality of Equality Impact Assessment (EQIA) and to develop meaningful outcomes.

The guidance is broken down into seven manageable sections and provides a step by step process to undertaking EQIA, as well as information to guide the strategic implementation within a health board. Each of the sections are interlinked for ease of use.
