2. Research aims and objectives

• The principal aim of this research project wasidentified as:
  - to evaluate Phase One of the Community Pharmacy HealthPromotion Project, involving assessment of the level of use and factorsinfluencing use of the resource materials produced for Community Pharmacistsduring National Smile Week 1997

2.1 Objectives of the research

• The specific objectives of this research projectwere:
  - to explore Community Pharmacists’ understanding oftheir role as health promoters
  - to assess the general use made of health promotionmaterials (specifically Pharmacy Health Care Scheme materials) by CommunityPharmacists (for example if and how materials are displayed)
  - to establish how the dental resource material wasdistributed to Community Pharmacists
  - to identify if/how the dental material has been used byCommunity Pharmacists during National Smile Week
  - to assess what factors influenced if or how resourcematerials were used (for example appropriateness of the method of distribution,corporate priorities, level of support and so on)
  - to consider how relevant the resource materials were toCommunity Pharmacists
  - to establish what links have been made with other healthprofessionals at a local level to support Community Pharmacists during NationalSmile Week
  - to establish Health Promotion Specialists’ perceptionof how the dental resources were used, and factors which influenced their use
  - to identify what additional support Community Pharmacistswould like in relation to dental/oral health, and health promotion in general
