2. Aims and objectives

The main aim of the evaluation was to assess the education and training needs of multi-professional primary care teams in relation to;

  • overweight and obesity
  • on-line learning
  • implementation of the SIGN Guideline

Specific objectives for the evaluation were to;

  • assess knowledge of overweight and obesity, including contextual factors (e.g. physical activity, medical and psychosocial factors)
  • assess awareness of the SIGN guideline and any activity implemented to date in relation to it
  • assess current attitudes towards overweight or obese patients
  • identify current practice in relation to advice on/treatment of overweight and obesity
  • identify perceived education and training needs in relation to treatment of overweight and obesity
  • assess attitudes towards on-line learning
  • identify training and support needs in relation to IT
  • identify existing initiatives and evidence of good practice in this field

Primary target groups were GPs, nurses and midwives working in a primary care setting with community dietitians forming a secondary target group.
